Markham College has a policy of complete transparency in regard to our levels of academic achievement and we are pleased to publish our public examination results on our website in full.

Students throughout the school are entered for a number of different international examinations. In the Upper School students are entered for Cambridge ESOL examinations, IGCSE examinations and most students also study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Success in these examinations has led to an increasing number of Markham students continuing their education after school by entering some of the best universities around the world. Details of student placement at such universities can be obtained from the Careers and Counselling Department on request.

English Language Examinations

Preliminary English Test (PET)
We have gradually moved this examination down the school and it is now taken in Primary 5.

A pass in this examination indicates that a student has acquired sufficient English skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening to operate efficiently in an English-speaking country.

In 2018, 143 students, comprising the whole of the P5 year group, were entered for the examination with over half of them, 55.24% obtaining the top 2 grades in the examination.

First Certificate in English (FCE)
As with PET, we have gradually moved this examination down the school. It was originally taken in S5 but is now sat by all students in S2.

FCE is an intermediate-level examination that tests the level of English required for further academic study at university or clerical, secretarial and managerial work in business. Successful candidates receive a certificate awarded by the University of Cambridge recognised by universities and employers throughout the world.

In 2018 we are pleased to report very good results with 129 students gaining pass grades of A – C with 50% of the students gained the top 2 grades in the examination.

Certificate of Advanced English (CAE)
Most students at Markham follow the two year IB Diploma programme. Those who opt to study the one year National Programme are entered for the CAE. The CAE is a high-level English examination that requires both ability and motivation from the students if they are to do well. In 2017, 32 students passed this examination with grades A – C.

Local and foreign universities give English course credits for passes in FCE and CAE and possession of these certificates will be of great value in future academic study.

IGCSE is the international equivalent of the examinations taken by UK students at the age of 16. Over 500,000 entries are made each year by students from over 140 countries in over 3,700 different schools. IGCSE examination results are the best way of comparing academic standards across different schools as the criteria for the examinations are the same world-wide.

All Markham students are entered for at least 10 IGCSE subjects that include English and Spanish, both overwhelmingly at first language level, Literature in both languages, Double Science, International Mathematics, either History or Geography, and two other subjects from the following list: Art & Design, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Design Technology, Drama, Food & Nutrition, French, Music or Physical Education. In addition, some students are also entered for IGCSEs in Additional Mathematics.

In 2018, 144 S4 students sat 1484 IGCSE examinations, an average of over 10 per student. The average number of IGCSEs gained per student was 9.3 and all students gained at least 5 grades A-C.5 students gained 10 or more A*/A grades.

A detailed table of departmental results is provided above.

In addition, three students have won prestigious awards in recognition of their exceptional results. Cambridge Top in the World awards are given to students who achieve the highest mark in the world in an IGCSE subject.

The flagship academic programme at Markham is the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Students who choose to follow this course must agree to stay on at school for a sixth year of study. We have sustained this policy for more than 16 years with a high degree of success.

In 2018, the school entered 80 students for the IB Diploma with a choice of study from 40 different subjects and levels, over largest ever offering. The average point score of 32.9 is over 4 points above the world average at the previous November session. Seven students achieved 40 points or more.
